Squirrel Nutkin

In 1901, Beatrix Potter was spending the summer with her family in Lingholm, a house on the shores of Derwentwater in England's lovely lake district. She wrote a letter all about the squirrels she saw there to eight-year old Norah Moore, daughter of her former governess: "An old lady who lives on the island says she thinks they come over the lake when her nuts are ripe; but I wonder how they can get across the water? Perhaps they make little rafts!" The letter then goes on to relate the story of Nutkin, a cheeky squirrel who likes to play while the other squirrels work and who is finally punished by Old Brown, an owl whom Beatrix has substituted for the old lady of her letter. The finished book, published in 1903, was titled The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and became the second in the series following her great success with The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Dedicated "To Norah", it contains many views of the beautiful lake, Derwentwater, which remains largely unchanged today.

In 2004, Squirrel Nutkin was added to R. John Wright's Beatrix Potter collection. Fully jointed, and made of the finest custom mohair plush hand colored to the striking russet shades in Beatrix Potteršs original artwork, Squirrel Nutkin measures approximately 9" tall. He features hand-embroidered detailing, inset resin claws, and custom-made glass eyes. In one paw he holds a handcrafted felt crab apple which he aims at his green felt fir-cone ninepins! No detail was overlooked in striving for the utmost in quality design and craftsmanship to bring this charming and realistic character to life.

Squirrel Nutkin came enclosed in his own R. John Wright presentation box. Included with each is an illustrated storybook, signed Certificate of Authenticity, and the forms for owner registration. The R. John Wright Beatrix Potter series ended in 2008.
