RJW Interview: The Lenci Doll Collector "Edith, The Lonely Doll" ®

Edith

Once there was a little doll. Her name was Edith.
She lived in a nice house and had everything she needed except someone to play with.
She was lonely! Then one morning Edith looked into the garden and there stood two bears!

Since it was first published in 1957, The Lonely Doll® has established itself as a unique children's classic. Through innovative photography, author Dare Wright brought the world of a doll named "Edith" and two teddy bears named "Mr. Bear" and "Little Bear", vividly to life. The toys Dare chose as characters were classics from the world of children's playthings: a Series 109 Italian Lenci doll from her childhood, and German Shucco and Steiff brand teddy bears. With simple poses and wonderful expression, the atmospheric black & white photographs told an unforgettable story of friendship. The book was widely read throughout the 1960's and is now being enjoyed by its third generation of readers.

For 2007, the fiftieth anniversary of the first publication of The Lonely Doll®, we are proud to present a very special Anniversary Edition of Edith, The Lonely Doll® from R. John Wright. Measuring 22" tall - the same size as the original doll - Edith, the Lonely Doll® is fully jointed and made of the finest all-wool felt. Her face is artistically sculpted and delicately hand painted to closely resemble the original Lenci model 109. Edith features a hand knotted wig made of the finest human hair and 14k gold hoop earrings in each ear.

Edith

Edith, The Lonely Doll® is costumed in the signature gingham dress meticulously pieced of all-wool felt in custom-dyed shades of pink. Over her dress Edith wears a dainty apron made of fine cotton organdy which fastens at the back with two mother of pearl buttons. Her undergarments consist of a cotton organdy teddy with hemstitched edge (an exact replica of the original) and a cotton slip with fine Swiss embroidered trim. On her feet Edith wears custom woven cotton anklets and hand cobbled black felt shoes with glass buttons and leather soles and heels. As a special anniversary gift, around her neck is a beautiful 14k gold locket. The locket opens to reveal photos of her best friends, Mr. Bear and Little Bear!
